Breaking Bad is the story of a man who clings so strongly to his toxic, deeply misguided vision of "manhood", the ideas he has about what makes one cool and what makes one pathetic, that he'd rather destroy every relationship he has than rely on other people when he's told he has cancer.

A man who ascribes so little value to things like humility, loyalty, the wellbeing of others, his work in education, his family relations, that he wants nothing more than to make something blow up because it makes him feel like a big man, and then spends the rest of the day committing felonies in a masturbatory adrenaline rush.

The man is like a misogynistic midlife crisis crossed with a time bomb. He destroys everything in recurring self-destructive fits of lightly-scuffed pride, impulsively acting on this desire to be the ridiculous hypermasculine ideal he imagines himself to be. At the end of the show he admits it: His family never mattered. It was all for him. It made him feel important. He dies alone in a shithole after making everyone who ever loved or respected him despise him.

And then a bunch of dudes were like "this guy is such a badass" because he did just make something blow up and it was cool.

Despite it all i think it's an amazing show and a great commentary on toxic masculinity. It just tries to have its cake and eat it too.
