So, Buddhist Two Face?

So when I first saw Batman Ninja, of all the crazy-ass shit that they show us in this film, I was very confused by Two-Face's castle mech. Because like... Unlike the other castles, it looks more like a Buddhist temple/statue than a palace...? So like... What the heck is going on here!??? I'm all for the crazy shit going on in this film, but just... Why have this be Two-Face's palace...?

I figured that maybe at least part of the answer would lie with the name. Because all of the castles have names that they didn't really translate back into English (With the exception of Arkham Castle which is... You know... They took Arkham Asylum and turned it into a castle... Somehow... >.>), including Two-Face's castle!

So Two-Face's castle in the Batman Ninja movie is called, "Fudo Omote Two-Face Castle". Now obviously, the last two bits are just saying who owns it and the fact that it's a castle. And since I don't speak any Japanese, I needed to look up what "Fudo Omote" could possibly mean.

So from the looks of it, "Fudo" means "inmovable" and seems to be a Buddhist principle of sorts. Like... It seems to represent a kind of mental state that is unflinching and unwavering- inmovable, while also being fully aware of and focusing on everything. [Longer explanation and definition here.] I really think that this must be an idea that doesn't translate into English very easily. In this context, Fudo is likely also being used in reference to Fudo Myo-o who is a Japanese Buddhist god (primarily in Esoteric Buddhism) and a protector of Buddhism itself. Fudo Myo-o seems to be a kind of wrathful deity who is very unflinching in his faith, which is interesting when you try to relate that to Two-Face and what it might imply about his character in this particular situation. [There are a few things about this Buddhist deity that I really think would appeal to Two-Face as a character specifically, but I don't want to get into it. Regardless, you can read more about it here.] So with this in mind, Two-Face's palace likely is a Buddhist temple, and the influence shows. Personally it makes me think that Two-Face REALLY got into Buddhism while in feudal Japan, and that idea just tickles me and I think it's neat! :D

Meanwhile "Omote" means "outer", "surface", or "front" but is more likely referencing the idea of having an "outer face" or a "pubic face". In Japan, the idea of having a face that you show to the public that is wholly different from who you are privately is a common idea. It is expected that your "outer face" (omote) and your "inner face" (ura) are separate. And just... Oh yes... HELL YES! I can ABSOLUTELY see why Two-Face would have latched onto this idea! This concept is just... So... HIM! I absolutely love what this says and implies about this iteration of Two-Face! Omote and ura are the ideas of being two-faced, but divorced from the negative connotation that the phrase has in English! The idea that the person that you are in public and the person you are in private being different is seen as being deceitful in western cultures. But in Japan, this is seen as just how people are! It also implies that Harvey Dent isn't gone. He just went from being the "outer face" to becoming the "inner face." He and Two-Face just switched, and so now Two-Face is who you see out there in the public, and Harvey Dent is who you only see once he's comfortable with you, he lets down his guard, and drops the pretext. I just LOVE how this one little word being here implies so much about this iteration of Two-Face! It's a whole reading on his character that is deeply Japanese and just wouldn't happen in an English-speaking mindset! To be honest, it's kinda brilliant and I love it! So together I guess that the name of Two-Face's castle is something like, "Inmovable Outside (Face) Two-Face Castle"... Sounds pretty clunky to me, but hey! That's anime for you! I guess that "Inmovable Outside Face" kinda describes bravery...? You know, the idea of being inmovable on the outside in the face of danger, even if you're scared on the inside...? I don't know if that was what they were going for with this, but it sure is interesting at the very least! And I certainly understand what they were going for with this castle design a lot better now at the very least! :D

If I remember correctly he is described as having an air of sleaziness.

I guess I imagine him being even slimier and more resentful than SVSSS Shang Qinghua, hungry for respect and lashing out at all perceived slights." So he's Su Mingshan.

Basically. Jin Guangyao is also a top contender for sample characterization, depending on whether Original Shang Qinghua was capable of being charming / likable. I want to say something about the intelligence of Jin Guangyao vs. Su Minshan here, but JGY let his spite and resentment make some truly foolish and evil moves, so I don’t think it really matters. 

I don’t think SVSSS ever makes it clear whether the public perception of Original Shang Qinghua pre-betrayal was more “What a helpful and upstanding [martial] family man! Shame about his mediocre cultivation and low background.” (Jin Guangyao) or more “Oh, that guy.” / the main thing most people remember about this guy is the earworm diss track 13-year-old Lan Jingyi wrote about him that got mysteriously popular (Su Minshan, I assume).

YEAH. Yeah it’s like. Legit criminal how little of Megan we actually got, and with such little explanation too.

And it’s sad! Imagine we got more screentime for the main baddies, not just Overlord. Picture: there’s a whole mystery around who this anti-cybertronian campaigner who appeared out of literally nowhere. Then it’s discovered she’s in kahoots with Tarantulas, which raises the alarm for the heroes, then BOOM Overlord reveal! Afterwards there’s more dedication to explaining how and why they teamed up and began the experiment. That would’ve been much better than what was essentially “here’s this ordinary angry lady withJUST KIDDING ITS OVERLORD!”

The problem with Requiem is that it was a single issue, compared to the multi parter wreckers stories before it. So the pacing was bad, the characters were chaotically written, and ofc while Overlord was still one of the highlights, the whole Megan thing was abysmally underdeveloped when it had so much potential for a liar revealed narrative! Not only that but just questions answered for how he got accustomed to human life and how it affected the innocent people around him. But oh well, that’s primarily why FOWAU became a thing 😂

Hey! I feel a little dumb for asking but in the Mando S3 Trailer Bo says that "your (Din's) cult fractured our people" … was Bo not part of the cult aka Death Watch herself? I’m a bit murky on her story line and when she left DW and when in that timeline Mandalore fell. Is she just being an ass here because Din still tries to follow the DW rules and she got out?

Hi! It's not dumb at all, because the connection between Death Watch and Children of the Watch is unclear--they must be connected in some way, but they can't be the same thing because: - Din was rescued by Mandalorians with Death Watch on their armor, but we don't know that he was raised by them, he says he was raised in the "Fighting Corp" and doesn't recognize the name "Children of the Watch" when Bo-Katan says it to him - Pre Vizsla and the other Mandalorians who refused to give up the violent warrior ways were living on Concordia and he was the leader of Death Watch, so it's probably safe to assume they had a strong presence there. The Children of the Watch were living on Concordia at the time of the Empire glassing Mandalore, which is why they weren't killed along with everyone else. - Death Watch does not live by the rule of never being able to take off your helmet, so it can't be the exact same thing as the Children of the Watch. (Further, the way Bo-Katan says it, while you can argue that she is kind of a hypocrite--girl, YOU were part of the group that brought Maul to Mandalore, you don't get to be high and mighty about him being a problem there--I don't think the show meant for us to assume she was once part of COTW.) - It's unclear how much of a presence COTW had in the galaxy or how hidden they were--Paz Vizsla says that the Empire is why they're hiding like rats in sewers, but Din is extremely unaware of any other kind of Mandalorian, so were they just running around Concordia? Or is it bad writing that wanted to ignore there were other types of Mandalorians running around? Or is it just that Din doesn't know shit about fuck when it comes to Mandalore? - There may be more context to Bo-Katan's line of "your cult fractured our people" that we don't have yet--did something happen with COTW after she got the Darksaber? Is she referring to them being hidden when they needed them? Is she lumping them in with Death Watch or blaming them for the shitshow with Maul and not fighting back against him? Too many questions without an answer yet! tl;dr: While I think Death Watch and COTW are related somehow (perhaps an offshoot of Death Watch?), they're not the same thing and Bo-Katan never was part of Children of the Watch. Anything else, I'm not sure we have enough info on!

I agree with the above points, but the writers were also cowards for not making it clear that Misfire has three boyfriends, I mean, how else am I supposed to interpret him around Grimlock, Fulcrum and Swerve?

I feel like the IDW Transformers comics have kind of handled same-sex pairings in scifi fucking perfectly. It doesn’t paint a target on the characters or couples, but neither does it protect them. You have wholesome lovers who tend to each other, some of whom are helping each other get past histories of trauma some of whom don’t need to, you have the lovers whose romance is painful because they don’t find themselves worthy of their significant other or want to protect their SO from themselves, you get forms of manipulation and abuse like what Prowl did to Mesothulas to make him become Tarantulas… Even some transgirl rapscallions. The full fucking gambit. All niches covered outside of hypersexualization.

Now, the standard for Cybertronians is written as asexual/aromantic and opposite-gender couples are treated as just as normal for the species as a whole. Which also feels perfect for Cybertronians. But I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you want gay/pan/asexual characters prominently featured and featured with diversity of personality, IDW’s Transformers series is the place to go. (Completely ignoring Simon Furman’s run as head writer and starting with the post-war stories.) And none of it feels hamfisted or forced, it’s all organic, to use some rather ironic terminology.

Knockout: Being gentle, trying not to damage the cars. Lifting them by the undercarriage which is usually reinforced so it can be raised with jacks or hydrologic lifts. Even grabs the tires to pull himself up so he doesn't scratch their paint.

Random Transformers Idea:

Dinobots and Predacons, Fighting on prehistoric earth while the others are offline, it could be a show or comic showing both sides being their own subfactions of the Autobots and Decepticons, kinda like Beast Wars but way before them. Where it can show how both sides have been adapting to the new world and even make some friends with the prehistoric animals and maybe even cavepeople seeing them as gods.

It could even have this climactic ending where they find a way to combine into Volcanicus and Predaking and fight a massive battle that shakes the earth and starts an extinction event to the entire planet, basically what the meteor theory is to this story line, and both end up temporarily offline. But even when all life seems dead, murials around the globe shows many figures fighting, and two large figures on the center with their swords drawn. The Dinobots and Predacons, Volcanicus vs Predaking, the battle for Prehistoric Earth.

The question is what part of the combiner is Minimus, since I have this funny image in my head about Rodimus realizing that he's getting chewed out by Ultra Magnus's leg. Plus the thought of the minibots being so organized that they made their combined form both symmetrical and color coordinated is entirely in character for Minimus.

Another AU

This one is about Ultra Magnus again. Everything is the same EXCEPT Ultra Magnus actually consists of several combiners and when they de-combine they all turn out to be the same size as Minimus Ambus. One second they are Ultra Magnus, tall and proud, then they accidentally de-combine and now there’s five minibots running around and shouting about rules and regulations.
