I watched "blue eyed samurai" in two days in one breath....

more shibusky mizu 🌊 i tried to remember all of the various wounds she got throughout the show!
if furry!mizu is a shibusky.. then ringo would be a scottish fold cat with a bell around his neck
honestly i feel like even if you did ask mizu, i don't i think even SHE/HE/THEY would know how to answer. there has never been a singular point in her life where she's been able to decide for herself what she is. masculinity is a performance, femininity is her secret. she can't perform femininity well so when she IS a girl she's quite tomboy. masculinity seems to come to her by default as it's all she's ever been.
i feel like mizu would be the type to be rather unconcerned with her own gender or pronouns. kind of like apathetic nonbinary-ness, if this makes sense. but then again, this is me projecting as well since i too identify with this as an exhausted nonbinary person constantly getting gendered by other people when i really don't have one at all.
for me, i'm just me. and i'd imagine for mizu, mizu is just mizu. mizu's gender is mizu.
i think that kind of representation in the form of identity being an affliction is in itself very good and it is definitely something i think all of us, queer or otherwise, can relate to to at least some extent.
Alright here's another take on Mizu's gender:
The thing about Mizu is that characters in the show and people in real life project either "man" or "woman," "boy" or "girl" onto them, and Mizu more or less goes along with what they say, but I didn't notice a single moment where they outright communicated "I'm a woman" or "I'm a man." And I'm guilty too, I'm projecting "nonbinary" onto them!
But the thing is nobody has bothered to ask thus far, which is no doubt period accurate. But we're supposed to be more aware and open about gender than these fictional characters. I'm not saying there is a correct interpretation—because nothing has been confirmed, and regardless of what is or isn't confirmed it is to a degree* still up to the individual really—but it does irk me a bit to see so many people assuming and projecting, is all.
*By "to a degree" I mean there's what is or isn't confirmed, which will probably be that they're a woman; and then there's the undeniable validity of what individuals might see in them. Do you see them as a woman being forced to choose between a life of gendered mistreatment and a life of relative freedom, and choosing freedom? Very cool! But don't use what you see, however valid that is, to dictate what others see in Mizu. Same goes for all the other interpretations.
Bottom line is, if Mizu is confirmed to be a woman, which again would be most likely, that doesn't mean what trans people see in them isn't valid. If anything it becomes even more valid, because we will have been denied representation once again because of the politics of our time.
oh i guess i forgot to post this ?? umm im scared to draw humans right now so i tried drawing mizu as a shiba inu/husky mix instead.
i think i might have held off on posting this since i wanted to do two other drawings to add to this post, didn't, and then just forgot all together like the worthless animal that i am
BUT YEAH THOUGH. mizu... but puppy.
thinking about how identity is explored within blue eye samurai more as an affliction rather than something that is assigned by the self...
how mizu never once called herself a samurai (referring to herself as a 'swordsman') but others will assign virtues to her as though she is - only to get upset at her when she does not fight with honor
how mizu must perform masculinity, but how this is inauthentic to herself. as is every other performance of gender for her.
this also extends to characters like akemi who also have their identities 'inflicted' upon them from all directions...
the reveal that mizu is not only the ronin but also the bride is so well executed. the way she walks the line between man and woman, white and japanese, victor and victim... it's good fucking writing.
it may not seem like it but i think he has a really high emotional intelligence. he knew what kind of a person mizu is and he sensed that he must stay at her side because you know, she'll definetly need him. it's just mizu herself didn't know it yet so he had to prove his point :)
+ off topic but besides admiring mizu and seeing her as a master, as a friend, ringo chosed that path for mostly himself. like, he saw a lot of new things, places, people. learned so much and felt useful. he probably experienced way more stuff than he had in his previous lifestyle. i feel like gaining a close friend and helping someone to be great are just bonus points
thinking about how Ringo was so insistent on being Mizu's apprentice that he fr still followed her around after she literally threatened to kill him
it's almost 2am and im thinking about how akemi's sex scenes reflect her character so well. she sees people as steps to reach her goals. so, she reads them to learn their desires and uses this information to talk herself into their mind. she ends up achieving what she wants and also doesn't let them realize they are 'steps'. she will be great the same way she has sex
post-revenge arc, mizu and ringo living in a cabin near the town. since she is 'available' for a duel to the death, taigen challenges her again and mizu accepts as she promised. problem is, they can't settle on a date and keep delaying it for stupidest reasons .d
ringo is going to try a new soba recipe for dinner and of course he'll need both sides' opinions. what if mizu's opinion is biased? they can't trust taigen's pricky ass too.
mizu said if taigen will come here and linger everyday, he better be useful and talk less. so he collects woods, helps mizu for training, chops onions for ringo (which ended up being a mini-duel between him and mizu because ringo deserves the best chopped onions from the best samurai). but taigen is not stupid, he isn't going to fall for mizu's 'make taigen exhausted-slash him easily' plan. it won't be a fair fight. taigen has to rest and mizu should help him, she is responsible after all.
as the weather gets warmer, rumors of a big festival spread. ringo is so excited, talks non-stop about how much him and his master will have fun but taigen doesn't agree. he bets joining a festival with mizu is like carrying a heavy rock around while you are trying to enjoy your trip. mizu isn't obsessed with honour unlike taigen but she can't let that slide too. she will show him that she knows how to have fun, even more than him. they'll kill each other after the festival then.
(spoiler: they won't)
i like to think that every time taigen sees his scarf wrapping around mizu's neck he loses his mind. especially when she adjusts it or pulls it down slightly when it gets hot. something that belonged to him on mizu makes him go feral
mizu saying a broken sword fits taigen makes me feel insane- like. she did that sword. she caused that sword to be broken because she was 'impure'. that sword got stolen by a liar. later, that liar found her and hurt her with it. and then she earned the sword. but she still doesn't love it. to her, it's a solid proof of her impurity, her flaw.
then, she gave it to taigen. taigen helped her to escape, saved both of their lives with it. taigen, who once pointed out her impurity and harmed her because of it, used the same impurity to protect her.
and she admitted it. she said, "the broken sword fits your hand." maybe she thought, one day taigen will kill someone in order to protect himself with this sword, and it'll be me who saved him, my flaw saved him. taigen will know that too :)

I get obsessed with a piece of media only to learn the creator is a crappy person. The show it's self has a strong anti-colonist message but one of the co-creators is a Zionist, contradicting the entire show. I'm all for separating the art from the artist or whatever, but it is something to acknowledge and use to spread love and help for the people of Palestine.
The most important part of engaging in any fandom is being able to recognize the flaws of a work and understand it’s strengths and weaknesses. We can look at it objectively, still enjoy a work but also acknowledge the flawed nature of its creator.
If you have money to spare go to Operation Olive Branch and other Palestine relief funds. Donate to a family to help them get out off Gaza. Every dollar helps, it only gets more urgent by the day.
